Serving up a Career

This week, 11 budding cooks commenced a kitchen skills program run by Golden West

Apprenticeships. Golden West created the free two week program, which offers the opportunity for people seeking a career in the hospitality industry to get job-ready through the development of core skills, such as knife skills, safe food handling, food preparation and service skills.

“The hospitality industry in Toowoomba is booming, with a number of new cafes and restaurants
opened recently or due to open soon. The industry is looking to attract staff to fulfil a number of roles, and this program will deliver people with the right attitudes and importantly the right skills for a longterm career within the hospitality industry” says Darren Smith, Training Project Manager at Golden West Apprenticeships.

The kitchen skills program involves one week of training with Aurora Training Institute, followed by one week with a host employer. Participants who demonstrate a commitment to a career in
hospitality will be offered an apprenticeship or traineeship.

“This program provides an opportunity for employers to work with potential staff who have shown an interest in a career in the hospitality industry, and also generates a talent pipeline for the industry to tap into” said Darren. “The program is a great opportunity for businesses to source staff, yet still allows for further training and development of staff through either an apprenticeship or traineeship”.
