2016 School Leavers - what is your career choice?
After 12 years of schooling you’re probably thinking you’ve had enough, you’re over it and you just want to get out there and earn some money of your own. Right?
Today’s job market is very competitive and many students opt for further tertiary education through the university system to get a degree because they aren’t aware of the alternatives.
Well, guess what? Even a degree isn’t going to guarantee you can get a job doing what you’ve trained for, what you love! And it’s even harder in rural and remote areas of Australia because there just aren’t enough jobs to go around.
Vocational Training is a viable career pathway alternative to learning new skills and getting paid at the same time. It’s an amazing opportunity to kick start your career straight from school by stepping into a trade qualification apprenticeship or traineeship.
No matter what type of apprenticeship trade qualification you choose to do, by the time you complete all the training required you will have a set of skills specific to that trade, a national recognised qualification and the ability to literally go anywhere you want.
Doing an apprenticeship gives you more!
Have you heard of ‘portable skills’?
These are life skills which help you to progress beyond just the trade skills of an apprenticeship or traineeship. For example, let’s say you’re working in a mechanics workshop and part of your duties is to greet customers and take bookings for vehicle services. This can give you exposure to learning good customer service skills, dealing with customers every day is experience that you can ADD to your repertoire.
An apprenticeship will give you a chance to learn a range of ‘portable skills’ which can be applied to expand your career beyond the mechanics of your trade qualification. Because you are working in a real job while you are learning, you get exposure to real-life situations and learn how to deal with them in a mentoring environment. You do some learning on-the-job and attend college to get more specific practical experience, and by the natural progression of going to work everyday, working with other people, getting instructions from supervisors etc., you will learn how to deal with difficult people, how to manage your time, the disciplines of being responsible for creating a great work ethic and much more.
As a GoldenWest Apprenticeships employee we will provide you with all the mentoring and support you will need on-the-job and in your training. We act as your employer and place you with a Host Business where you can undertake all of your training.
Vocational training is a natural environment for you to develop better inter-personal skills, improve your problem-solving skills, understand and build better/strong relationship, and your confidence will grow.
These are skills you will need if you want to expand your career in the future or think about starting your own business and employing apprentices of your own.
