Apprenticeships Offer Great Career Opportunities

Young people should consider apprenticeships as a pathway to securing a great future career, according to recently completed local apprentice, Ben Graham.

Ben started his apprenticeship with Golden West Apprenticeships as a fresh faced 17 year old.  “I enjoyed problem solving and working on diesel engines, so an apprenticeship was a good fit for me” said Ben.  After seeing a position for a diesel fitting apprenticeship with Golden West Apprenticeships and Maranoa Regional Council, Ben jumped at the opportunity to secure his future career.

After almost four years of training as an apprentice, Ben is proud to show off his trade certificate.  Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Ben was offered a full-time position as a diesel fitter with Maranoa Regional Council.

Ben’s story of securing ongoing employment at the completion of his apprenticeship is common, a recent Australian Jobs 2018 report from the Department of Jobs and Small Business confirms that apprentices and trainees who complete are much more likely to secure ongoing employment.  The report confirmed that 81.2% of apprentice and trainee graduates were employed six months after graduating, much higher than students who have graduated from university with a bachelor degree.

“Apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way for businesses to secure their future workforce” said Ms Johnson CEO of Golden West Apprenticeships, “By supporting apprentices such as Ben to complete their apprenticeships, we are ensuring our rural and regional communities have a skilled workforce into the future.”

Maranoa Regional Councillor David Schefe, Portfolio Chair for Local Business said Maranoa Regional Council offers a range of apprenticeships and traineeships for keen individuals.

“Council is committed to providing apprenticeships and traineeships to give opportunities for eager learners and it’s great to see Ben now in a full-time position with Council,” Cr Schefe said.

Ben is proud of completing his apprenticeship and has some advice for others considering an apprenticeship pathway. Ben says “an apprenticeship is great, because you get hands on experience while getting a qualification”.
